About Dr. Dan

Influences

I am strongly influenced by two factors in my work as a psychologist:

First and foremost, I believe that the people with whom I work serve as the primary
"agents of change" in their own lives. Contrary to popular opinion, recent research
has shown that the most important factor in effective therapy is you, the client or
patient, not me, the therapist. I serve as a resource to facilitate, support, or focus
your abilities to heal yourself. You have many of these abilities - maybe more than
you realize.

Second, I take a strong interest in and stay informed about the latest research in
how life's experiences, especially the stressful or traumatic ones, affect our brains
and bodies. I believe that over our lifetimes, the collection of life's negative
experiences, including big and little traumas, influences every aspect of our
existence. Making sense of these experiences and putting them in proper
perspective really helps us gain back control of our lives and find some peace.

Approach

I use an "integrative" approach to therapy, meaning that I integrate various therapy
methods to fit your needs at the moment.  I fit the therapy to you, not the other way
around, and seek out your feedback about the effectiveness of our work so we can
make course corrections where necessary. I am proficient in many methods,
including client-centered, experiential, existential, mind/body, psychodynamic
, and
cognitive/behavioral. I have also completed training in EMDR (Eye Movement
Desensitization and Reprocessing) and make use of this when appropriate.

I can work with you at any level. Work with me can range from adjusting to a new
situation to engaging in a deeper, truly life-changing process. I always have the goal
of making my services unnecessary by enabling you to become your own guide and
achieve your own goals in life.

Areas of Practice

I work with individuals and couples and welcome adults of any ethnic background,
religious belief, sexual orientation, gender orientation, political leanings, spiritual
practice, "abledness," or any other categorization into which you might fit.

While I consider myself a generalist, I work extensively with people who have
experienced traumatic stress or abuse in their lives, which can cause them to
behave in ways that seem outside their control. I help them make sense of this and
help them to return to a more functional way of life. I believe that traumatic stress,
even a small amount, can influence your personality, relationships, career choices,
behaviors, and physical health, among many other things, throughout your life.

I also work extensively with people suffering from depression, anxiety, panic attacks,
loss or grief, relationship issues, or who are going through life transitions such as
mid-life, retirement, career, divorce, or becoming an adult (no matter what age).

Training

I received a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in clinical psychology from
Argosy University, Chicago in August, 2002. The program there is accredited by the
American Psychological Association. I have been licensed as a psychologist in
California since July, 2004. I have performed clinical work for over seven years and
trained in a range of environments. These include a state mental hospital, private
practices in ethnically diverse urban areas, a pre-doctoral internship in the student
counseling center at the University of Memphis, which is a training site approved by
the American Psychological Association, and a two-year post-doctoral internship in
a group private practice in the Sacramento area. Refer to my
curriculum vita (PDF*

LinkedIn.com for more details.

On a Personal Note

A native of Chicago, I came to the Sacramento, California area in August, 2002. I
spent over 20 years as a corporate manager with both large and small organizations
before deciding to make a mid-life career transition to something more meaningful to
me. I have been
happily married for over 28 years and have an adult daughter who
has two daughters of her own. For recreation, I enjoy travel, photography, jazz,
hiking, ethnic foods, collecting interesting
quotations, and continuous learning.

In early 2009, my wife and I adopted a senior "rescue dog" w
hom we named Petunia
(see picture on the right). She is a mix of Shih-Tzu, Lhasa Apso, cat, and Ewok. We
really enjoy her company and mellow nature.
