EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy
treatment that facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories to
bring these to an adaptive resolution. After successful treatment with EMDR,
emotional upset is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated, and bodily
distress is reduced. In addition to relief from traumatic stress, EMDR can be
useful in addressing a wide variety of problems, including anxiety, panic,
phobias, depression, grief, or chronic pain. Here are more details about
EMDR.

When it makes sense, and with your permission and collaboration, I can use
EMDR within the course of individual psychotherapy or couples therapy. I might
use it simply to develop or enhance "internal" resources, such as mental
"safe/calm places" or skills and strengths you need to achieve something. The
latter might include taking risks, setting boundaries, being assertive, or
managing anger. I might also use it to help make memories of negative life
experiences less intense and distressing by integrating them with other more
adaptive, healthy memories.

EMDR can also fit into your treatment by other mental health service providers.
For example, with agreement from and support by your other providers, I could
augment their work with you by providing you a limited number of very focused
EMDR sessions. These might address one or more specific issues, typically the
effects of an acute traumatic event such as a rape, mugging, or auto accident.
